To read a battery warranty, look at three things together: the year term, the throughput cap (the total kWh it will move over the term), and the guaranteed end-of-warranty capacity. A long term paired with a small throughput cap can be weaker than it first looks, because whichever limit you hit first ends the cover.
Most modern home batteries quote 10 years: Tesla (Powerwall), Sungrow (SBR), BYD (Battery-Box) and Sigenergy (SigenStor) all sit here. A few brands run longer: Enphase (IQ Battery) quotes 15 years. A throughput cap is the total energy a battery is warranted to move over its life, measured in kilowatt-hours, and the warranty ends at whichever comes first: the year term or the throughput. The caps are real and brand-specific: BYD caps at roughly 3,000 kWh per kWh of capacity, Sungrow quotes about 8,960 kWh per module, and Sigenergy warrants a minimum throughput energy (about 26.7 MWh on the 10 kWh SigenStor), each as an alternative limit to a 10-year term. Some brands frame the same idea as a cycle rating instead, for example Dyness at 6,000, and sonnen at 10,000.
Most warranties guarantee the battery still holds a stated percentage of its original capacity at the end of the term, typically 60–70%. Tesla and Sungrow both guarantee 70%; Enphase guarantees 60% over its longer 15-year term. A higher retained-capacity figure means more usable storage in the battery's final warranted years, so it's worth comparing alongside the term.
Warranties are conditional, not unconditional. Alongside the throughput and cycle caps above, manufacturers commonly attach operating conditions such as ambient temperature, how full or empty you keep the battery (state of charge), and how fast you charge and discharge it. Installation by an accredited installer and registration within a set window are also often required.
