WA battery prices: the September 2026 report

The desk note

First issue, so the honest headline is how flat the picture is. Our curated estimate index barely moved across seven weeks of readings — a one-percent easing in early August, then nothing. Catalogue list prices tell the quieter story underneath: the priced catalogue skews large — three in five priced models sit in the 20 kWh-plus band, which carries the lowest median cost per kilowatt-hour. The number that moves the most is not a price at all — it is the incentive arithmetic, which steps down on a schedule. Prices are steady; the subsidy clock is not.

A weekly hardware $/kWh signal computed from the desk's curated price estimates across 106 battery models. It is our estimate of the market, refreshed on a cadence — not observed transactions — and it is labelled that way on purpose.

Published list prices from our product catalogue — hardware RRP including GST, after the federal battery rebate, before installation — banded by usable capacity. Coverage is partial and stated: 209 of the roughly 3,500 CEC-approved batteries publish a comparable list price. No published prices exist under 8 kWh, so that band is absent rather than invented.

List prices are not installed prices — installation, switchboard work and retrofit conditions sit on top. That is what layer 3 is for.

We do not hold installed-transaction data, so this layer is deliberately a citation, not a claim of our own. Across the 10 popular battery models Solar Choice tracks nationally (average installed cost including the federal rebate, excluding state rebates, as at 1 Sept 2026), installed prices span roughly $633–$1265 per usable kWh, with a median near $865/kWh. WA quotes also subtract the state rebate below, which that national figure excludes.

• WA Battery Scheme (Synergy customers): $130/kWh up to $1,300.
• Federal battery rebate: roughly $2,713 on a 10 kWh system at today's rate — and that rate steps down again at the next scheduled reduction, which is the real deadline in this report.
• Combined, 10 kWh, Synergy: up to $4,013 off before installation quotes are compared. Eligibility conditions apply to both programs.
