Tesla Powerwall 3 review: brilliant hardware, one WA-sized catch

The Powerwall 3 packs 13.5 kWh of usable capacity with 11.5 kW of continuous output — more than double the continuous power of the superseded Powerwall 2, and enough to run most of a house at once rather than a circuit or two. The move to LFP chemistry matters in Perth specifically: it tolerates our 45°C summers far better than the old NMC cells, with a −20°C to 50°C operating range that keeps throttling rare.

The integrated solar inverter (11.5 kW, direct string connection) means a new solar-plus-battery install needs one box, not two. Backup is the headline act: grid-outage detection in roughly 20 milliseconds, whole-home coverage, and Storm Watch pre-charging before forecast weather. Over-the-air updates have a real track record of adding features after purchase, and up to four units stack to 54 kWh if you're running a very hungry household.

What it costs you in WA

• The rebate is off the table. The WA Residential Battery Scheme pays $130 per kWh of usable capacity up to $1,300, and a Powerwall 3 system cannot claim it. On a battery this size, that's the full cap you're leaving behind, on top of a price that already sits at the premium end. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is a separate scheme with its own rules — your installer's quote will show what applies.
• The integrated inverter cuts both ways. Elegant on a new install; awkward on a retrofit, where it can duplicate a perfectly good existing solar inverter. If you're adding storage to existing panels, get the compatibility conversation out of the way first.
• Tesla-certified installers only, which narrows your quote pool compared with open-ecosystem batteries.
• Field-reported round-trip efficiency runs 90–92% — respectable, though the best DC-coupled pairings do better on paper.

Who it suits

Choose the Powerwall 3 if whole-home backup is your first priority — nothing at this price point rides through an outage as gracefully — or you're doing a fresh solar-plus-storage build where the one-box design and the software ecosystem earn their premium. Tech-forward households who'll actually use the app, the optimisation modes and the update stream get real value here.

Look elsewhere if the WA rebate is load-bearing in your budget — several LFP rivals of comparable capacity qualify for the full $1,300 when paired with an SSL-listed hybrid inverter, and that gap compounds with the price difference.
