What Makes Modular Systems Different

Modular batteries like those from BYD and Sungrow are built from stackable units - typically 2-8 modules that combine to create your total capacity. This approach offers flexibility: you can start smaller and add capacity later, or size the system precisely for your needs.

Both manufacturers use LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry in their modular ranges, which offers long cycle life and good safety characteristics. Both are DC-coupled, meaning they connect to your solar system through a hybrid inverter rather than having their own built-in inverter.

Key Differences in System Design

Module Sizing

Different manufacturers use different module sizes. This affects how precisely you can match your capacity needs. Smaller modules give more flexibility but may mean more components to install. Larger modules are simpler but offer less granular sizing options.

When comparing systems, look at what capacity steps are available. Can you get close to your target capacity, or will you need to round significantly up or down?

Power Output Scaling

With modular systems, power output (how fast the battery can charge or discharge) typically scales with the number of modules. More modules usually means higher maximum power, but the relationship isn't always linear.

This matters for several reasons:

• Higher power output means faster charging from solar
• Higher discharge rates support running more loads simultaneously
• If you want backup power, you need sufficient output to run your essential loads

Ask your installer to explain the power ratings at your planned module count, not just the maximum with a full stack.

Inverter Compatibility

DC-coupled batteries need compatible hybrid inverters. Some batteries work with many inverter brands; others are designed primarily for their own brand's inverters.

One appeal of modular systems is adding capacity later. However, expansion isn't always straightforward:

• Your inverter needs to support the larger total capacity
• Mixing modules of different ages can sometimes affect performance
• Labour costs for adding modules later may exceed the cost of installing larger initially

If you think you might expand, ask your installer specifically what that process would involve and what it might cost. "Can add modules later" is different from "can easily and cheaply add modules later."

Both BYD and Sungrow modular batteries are compatible with Synergy's Virtual Power Plant programs. However, specific model eligibility and integration quality can vary. Confirm with your installer that your specific configuration qualifies for the VPP program you're interested in.
