Tesla Powerwall 3 Gets Backward Compatibility with Powerwall 2: Australia First
After 18 months of incompatibility frustration, Tesla has announced an over-the-air firmware update that will allow Powerwall 3 units to operate alongside existing Powerwall 2 systems. Australia and New Zealand are first in line for the rollout.
Key Details
- Over-the-air update — no technician visit required for existing Powerwall 2 owners
- Supports up to 4× Powerwall 2 + 1× Powerwall 3 + 3× PW3 Expansion units per site
- Australia and NZ receive priority rollout — firmware expected early June 2026
- Three-phase installations limited to 5 kW Powerwall 3 output in mixed configurations
Why This Matters for Perth Homeowners
Since the Powerwall 3 launched in Australia in August 2024, one of the biggest complaints from existing Powerwall 2 owners has been the inability to expand their system with the newer model. The two products operate on fundamentally different architectures — the Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled at 5 kW continuous, while the Powerwall 3 integrates a solar inverter and delivers 11.5 kW continuous.
Tesla's engineers have resolved this through a firmware update, meaning existing Powerwall 2 owners can now add a Powerwall 3 without replacing their current system. For Perth households that installed a Powerwall 2 during the initial battery boom of 2021-2023, this opens up a practical expansion path.
Supported Configurations
The update supports specific mixed configurations. Homeowners can combine up to four Powerwall 2 units with one Powerwall 3 and up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units at a single property. This allows total storage capacities of up to 94.5 kWh in a single installation.
What's Not Supported
- Gateway 1: Older installations using the original Tesla Gateway will need an upgrade to the Gateway 2 or Tesla Energy Gateway
- Neurio Meter: Sites using the legacy Neurio energy meter are not compatible with mixed PW2/PW3 configurations
- Three-phase limitation: On three-phase grid connections (common in larger Perth homes), the Powerwall 3's output is limited to 5 kW in mixed configurations
Timeline for Perth
Tesla has confirmed Australia and New Zealand will be the first markets to receive the compatibility update, reflecting Australia's position as one of Tesla Energy's largest markets globally:
- March 2026: Official announcement and installer notification
- May–June 2026: Technical documentation published, installer training webinars conducted
- Early June 2026: Firmware rollout begins — OTA update pushed to existing units
- September 30, 2026: Deadline to install and register for Tesla's rebate program
Tesla's Next Million Powerwall Rebate
Separately, Tesla is offering up to $1,500 AUD per address (via a Virtual Visa Reward Card) for new Powerwall 3 installations to mark one million global Powerwall installations. This rebate stacks with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which provides approximately $3,650 for a single Powerwall 3.
- Order deadline: March 31, 2026
- Install and register deadline: September 30, 2026
Powerwall 2 Recall Reminder
Perth homeowners with Powerwall 2 units manufactured between November 2020 and June 2022 should check whether their unit is affected by the ACCC voluntary recall (published September 2025). Tesla is replacing affected units at no cost. Contact Tesla Energy support or check the ACCC Product Safety portal to verify your serial number.
What About the WA State Rebate?
It's important to note that the Tesla Powerwall (both 2 and 3) is not currently on Synergy's Supported Solutions List (SSL). This means Powerwall installations do not qualify for the WA Residential Battery Scheme rebate, the interest-free loan, or Synergy Battery Rewards VPP credits.
If stacking WA state incentives is a priority, consider SSL-approved alternatives like Sungrow, Fronius, GoodWe, or Huawei systems. These can access the full suite of WA benefits alongside the federal STC rebate.
Our Take
This update resolves one of the most frustrating limitations of the Powerwall 3 launch. For the estimated 20,000+ Perth households with existing Powerwall 2 systems, a practical expansion path is now available. However, the three-phase output limitation and Gateway 1 incompatibility mean some owners will face additional upgrade costs. Use our savings calculator to model whether expanding your system makes financial sense with current electricity rates.
