Tesla Powerwall 3 Launches in Australia: What Perth Homeowners Need to Know
Tesla's latest home battery brings significant upgrades with integrated solar inverter, improved efficiency, and competitive pricing for the Australian market.
Note: This article was originally published in August 2024. The Powerwall 3 has since become one of the most popular batteries in Perth. For current pricing with 2026 rebates, see our Tesla Powerwall 3 page.
Key Highlights
- 13.5 kWh usable capacity with 100% depth of discharge
- 11.04 kW continuous AC output (up to 20kW peak for 10 seconds)
- 97.5% round-trip efficiency - among the best in class
- 10-year warranty with integrated solar inverter
What's New in Powerwall 3
Tesla's Powerwall 3 represents a significant evolution from the Powerwall 2, launched in Australia on August 16, 2024. The most notable upgrade is the integrated solar inverter, eliminating the need for a separate hybrid inverter in new installations. This integration simplifies installation and reduces overall system costs.
The Powerwall 3 maintains the 13.5 kWh usable capacity that made the Powerwall 2 popular but improves continuous power output to 11.04 kW (up from 5 kW in Powerwall 2). This higher output means the Powerwall 3 can power more appliances simultaneously, including air conditioning, pool pumps, and electric vehicle charging during blackouts.
Pricing for Perth Homeowners
The Powerwall 3 is priced from $11,900 before installation, not including the required Tesla Gateway unit. When factoring in professional installation and the Gateway, Perth homeowners should expect total costs between $15,000-$18,000 depending on installation complexity.
The federal STC rebate can reduce the cost significantly:
- Federal STC rebate: ~$4,500 (113 STCs × $39.9 for 13.5kWh battery, Jan-Apr 2026)
Important: Tesla Powerwall is not currently on Synergy's Supported Solutions List (SSL), which means it does not qualify for the $$1,300 WA state battery rebate, the interest-free loan, or Synergy Battery Rewards VPP credits. If WA state incentives are important to you, consider SSL-approved alternatives like Sungrow, Fronius, GoodWe, or Huawei systems which can access up to $$1,300 in state rebates plus VPP earnings.
After the federal STC rebate, the out-of-pocket cost drops to approximately $10,500-$13,500 depending on installation complexity.
How It Compares to Alternatives
While the Powerwall 3 offers impressive specifications, Perth homeowners should consider alternatives that may better suit their needs:
Sungrow SBR HV Series
Sungrow's modular battery system offers flexibility that the fixed-size Powerwall 3 cannot match. Starting at 9.6 kWh and expandable to 25.6 kWh (or 102.4 kWh with parallel stacks), the SBR series allows homeowners to right-size their system. Pricing starts at $8,000 for 9.6kWh, making it more accessible for smaller households. The >97% round-trip efficiency matches the Powerwall 3's performance.
BYD Premium HVM
BYD's modular approach lets homeowners start with 8-10 kWh and expand over time as needs grow. This flexibility is particularly valuable for households uncertain about their future energy requirements. BYD batteries are known for reliable performance at competitive prices, typically $1,000-$2,000 less than equivalent Powerwall 3 installations.
Perth-Specific Considerations
For Perth homeowners on Synergy's network, several factors make the Powerwall 3 particularly attractive:
- VPP compatibility: The Powerwall 3 is not currently on Synergy's SSL, so it does not qualify for Battery Rewards VPP. Consider SSL-approved alternatives if VPP earnings are a priority.
- DEBS optimization: The 13.5 kWh capacity is well-suited for maximizing DEBS peak export earnings (3-9pm window)
- Backup power: The 11kW output can power most Perth homes during blackouts, including air conditioning
- Western Power approval: Tesla has streamlined approval processes with Western Power for faster connection
Is Powerwall 3 Right for You?
The Powerwall 3 is an excellent choice for Perth homeowners who:
- Want a premium, all-in-one solution with integrated solar inverter
- Need high power output for backup during blackouts (11kW continuous)
- Value the Tesla brand and ecosystem integration
- Have 13.5 kWh as their target capacity (not planning to expand)
However, consider alternatives if you:
- Want to start smaller and expand capacity over time (consider BYD or Sungrow)
- Are cost-conscious and don't need the integrated inverter
- Already have a quality hybrid inverter installed
- Need more than 13.5 kWh capacity
Our Take
The Powerwall 3 is a solid evolution that addresses many of the Powerwall 2's limitations. The integrated inverter and higher output make it a compelling option for new installations. However, Perth's competitive battery market means homeowners should compare multiple options.
