WA Battery Rebate: Current Program Details
The WA Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme includes battery incentives for households joining the Synergy Battery Rewards VPP program. Here's what Perth homeowners need to know.
Current WA Battery Rebate
The WA Residential Battery Scheme provides rebates calculated at $130 per kWh of battery capacity, capped based on your electricity retailer:
- Synergy customers: $$130/kWh up to $$1,300 (10kWh max eligible, requires Battery Rewards VPP participation)
For a 10kWh battery, Synergy customers receive the maximum $$1,300 rebate. The rebate is applied at the point of sale through your installer, reducing upfront costs immediately.
Interest-Free Loan Option
Eligible households can also access an interest-free loan of up to $10,000 for battery systems on the Synergy Supported Solutions List (SSL). This loan option is available for approved products and can be combined with the rebate to make battery storage more accessible.
VPP Participation Requirement
To access the WA battery rebate, Synergy customers must join the Battery Rewards Virtual Power Plant program. This allows Synergy to dispatch your battery during peak demand events, typically occurring during the 3-9pm window on hot summer days.
Key program details:
- Typically 15-25 dispatch events per year
- Events typically last 2-4 hours
- VPP earnings at 70¢/kWh (~$100-180/year for 10-13kWh batteries)
- Your battery remains available for backup power during blackouts
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the WA battery rebate, households must:
- Be connected to the Western Power network (SWIS)
- Have an existing solar PV system or install one concurrently
- Join Synergy Battery Rewards VPP program
- Install a battery from Synergy's Supported Solutions List
- Use a CEC-accredited installer
- Have reliable internet connectivity for VPP communication
Stacking with Federal STCs
The WA state rebate stacks with federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). For a 10 kWh battery in 2026, combined incentives typically reduce the upfront cost by $3,000-$4,000 depending on current STC market prices and your specific system.
Note that STC values decrease annually as the program phases toward 2030. Larger batteries (over 14 kWh) will see reduced STC benefits from May 2026 due to new capacity taper rules.
Economic Outlook for Perth Batteries
For a typical Perth household using 20-25 kWh daily, a 10-13.5 kWh battery system can deliver annual savings of $1,200-1,800 through:
- Self-consumption of solar (avoiding ~32c/kWh grid imports)
- DEBS peak exports (10c/kWh during 3-9pm)
- VPP earnings (~$100-180/year for 10-13kWh)
With current rebates, payback periods typically range from 7-10 years depending on usage patterns.
How to Apply
The rebate application is handled by approved installers. When you receive a quote, the installer will include the rebate discount in your final price. You don't need to apply separately or claim the rebate back after installation.
Ensure your chosen battery appears on Synergy's Supported Solutions List (DER-Storage section) before proceeding with installation.
