AC vs DC-coupled batteries

An AC-coupled battery has its own inverter and bolts onto almost any existing solar system. That suits a retrofit, or any case where you don't want to replace a working non-hybrid inverter. A DC-coupled battery sits on the solar side of a hybrid inverter. It suits a new install or a full upgrade, because energy moves through fewer conversion steps.

When AC-coupled wins

• You already have a working PV system and want to add storage to it.
• You want installation flexibility and straightforward backup wiring.

When DC-coupled wins

• You're installing new PV and a battery together, or replacing the inverter with a hybrid.
• You want fewer conversion stages and integrated hardware.

Choose AC-coupling for a straightforward retrofit. Choose DC-coupling for a new build or hybrid system, where efficiency and tighter integration count for more. Either way, check that the battery and inverter are on the CEC lists, and on the Synergy SSL if you want the WA battery rebate.
