Everything Perth homeowners need to know about Western Power approval and grid connection for battery systems, under the framework in force since 1 May 2026.
Current WA Connection Requirements
Under the WA framework in force since 1 May 2026, all new solar and battery installations comply with CSIP-AUS requirements and select a customer tier for export limits. Learn more below.
All battery systems in Western Australia require Western Power approval before installation. The process ensures your battery system is compatible with the grid and meets safety standards.
Installer reviews your existing system, checks grid capacity, and confirms equipment compatibility
Typical duration: 1-2 daysInstaller submits all documentation to Western Power through the online portal
Typical duration: Same dayTechnical assessment of application, checking compliance and grid impact
Typical duration: 5-20 business daysOnce approved, installer proceeds with installation and commissioning
Typical duration: 1-2 daysPost-installation paperwork submitted, system registered with Western Power
Typical duration: Same dayMissing datasheets or incorrect equipment details. Always use CEC-approved components.
Transformer capacity limitations in your area. May require network upgrades.
Older inverters or batteries not meeting current AS/NZS standards.
All new solar and battery installations from May 2026 must use CSIP-AUS compliant equipment on the Synergy Supported Solutions List. CSIP-AUS enables:
Internet Connectivity Required
Systems without reliable internet are limited to 1.5kW export. If internet connectivity is lost, systems automatically revert to this fallback limit.
Standard Small User Facilities (residential) have a maximum aggregate capacity of 30kVA. Single-phase inverters are capped at 10kVA.
From May 2026, all new installations must select a customer tier. Your tier determines your export limit and eligibility for incentive programs.
No ongoing internet required
Emergency Solar Management
Full remote management
Tier 2 is required for WA Battery Scheme rebate eligibility. Learn more about rebate requirements.
To maintain grid stability, batteries have specific restrictions on grid charging and discharging:
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Protects grid during peak evening demand. Solar charging unaffected.
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Prevents instability during solar peak. Self-consumption allowed.
Existing systems installed before 1 May 2026 are grandfathered and retain their original export limits:
5kW export limit (most common in Perth suburbs)
Your battery can charge from solar, but total export to grid is capped at 5kW
0kW export (constrained areas)
All solar must be used on-site or stored in battery. No grid export allowed.
10kW+ export (good network areas)
Available in areas with strong grid infrastructure. May have additional fees.
Opt-in available: Legacy systems can opt-in to new requirements to access VPP and Battery Rewards. A gateway device may be required for non-CSIP-AUS inverters.
